A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ME
ROBERT “COZMO” CONSULMAGNO
“Cozmo’s’’ mother got pregnant when she was just 15 years old, so he was the “baby of a baby.’’ His biological father, who he barely remembers, hung himself when Cozmo was just eight years old. It was later learned he suffered from schizophrenia.
“WE ALL HAVE CHALLENGES AND ISSUES IN LIFE. WHAT MATTERS IS THAT YOU MAKE A CHOICE TO OWN IT AND FIGHT LIKE HELL TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.”
Raised by a brutal stepfather, Phillip, who at times spoiled “Cozmo’’ by taking him to sporting events and shows and having him meet the stars up close, his life became a living hell when things went wrong. If one of Phillip’s favorite teams lost a game, Cozmo’s mother was beaten. And so was Cozmo. One time so badly he was left in a body cast.
Nothing ever happened to Phillip, who was respected around the community of Jersey City, New Jersey, where the family lives, because of his reputation with the New York and New Jersey organized crime families. Finally after the abuse got too much to take, Cozmo’s mother packed him and his older brother up and they escaped in the middle of the night with her new boyfriend, Charles.
Phillip, enraged when he awoke and saw them gone, sought after Charles and shot him in the head. He thought he killed him and later that day killed himself. Fortunately, Charles was just wounded.
Upon his graduation from Dickinson High School, which sat across from the World Trade Center, “Cozmo’’ skipped his actual graduation ceremony and joined the Marines.
During his five-year stint in the corp he was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder one and PTSD. He ran from illness and traveled the country from Las Vegas to Chicago to parts of Florida and back to the Northeast.
Finally, inspired by the legend of his great-grandfather Boxing Hall of Famer, Michael Consulmagno, aka Mickey Taylor, “Cozmo’’s medicine became the martial arts.
As he rose to the top of his field, “Cozmo’’ decided to help others afflicted with the same disease and troubles he faced in his life and has begun a career as a keynote speaker for mental health.
“All I want to do,’’ he says, “is help protect people and save lives.’
